General Walter Martin Mansion 1805

General Walter Martin Mansion

The General Walter Martin Mansion (Greystone) was acquired by the Society in 2005, exactly 200 years after the main portion of the building was erected.  General Martin was an officer in the War of 1812 and the founder and promoter of Martinsburg.  He gave money and land for the first County Court House, operated several mills, and was a State representative in the early history of Lewis County.

In the past few years we have slowly been restoring the mansion. This summer we are spending $170,000+ for new roofs, repairing of chimneys, refurbishing the southeast porch, structural support, and critical masonry. We had received a matching grant through New York State with our share being 25% or $42,500.  These monies have been raised through several years of fundraising such as our Home for the Holidays Festival, the Black River Valley Concert Series, and donations from individuals and foundations.

To continue the restoration of the building we have submitted a new grant request for $50,000 for improvements of the Northeast porch and more critical masonry, as well as replacing windows, which for the most part are modern and plastic. We need to raise 25% or $12,500 for this new grant.

Once this summer’s work is completed, we will have no monetary reserve for Greystone restoration. The Society is therefore launching a Capital Campaign, to run from September 1 through November 1, 2016, exclusively for Greystone.  Please help us continue to restore this building to its former splendor.

Anyone wishing to help the Society in this endeavor can send a check noted for “Appeal”. One can also use the PayPal donation button.  Any and all donations are gratefully accepted and appreciated.  Again, thank you for your past support with hope for your continued assistance.

Sincerely,

Marian M. Opela, President
